“Disappointed” 2009-11-12
By Barbara Kelley (Cape Cod, MA USA)
I did enjoy the product for a year and six weeks – when I started using the sensors the product stopped working within 15 minutes. I had not used the sensors until that time. The top of the microwave got red hot and just would not work anymore. There sat my dinner guests waiting. I had bragged about how delicious the meats are when cooked in a microwave. So I had them for dinner. $100 dollars down the drain. I purchased it from Amazon – now Amazon wants more than $143 for this microwave. I know it’s Sharp’s responsibility, they have to make a better product and give a longer warranty than a year.

“High Power Unit cooks evenly” 2009-07-06
By Jay S. Raleigh (St. Paul, MN USA)
The Sharp microwave arrived in perfect shape and worked as soon as we plugged it in. The 1200 watt unit replaced an older 700 watt unit and cooks the food in half the time. The carousel cooks the food more evenly and the controls are easy to use. I would recommend this unit to everyone.

“Major Pluses; Irritating Minuses; Great Service” 2008-10-12
By P. Lang (Connecticut USA)
The Sharp R-320HK delivers high power, a 1.2 cubic foot oven, and many features with a small footprint that will fit in many kitchens with limited counter space. The Carousel feature was a major factor in my purchase. BUT the keypad has several drawbacks: The tiny lettering is light gray on medium gray; my elderly parents could not even read the numbers, which were shadowed in addition. I ended up putting sticky labels on, after finally getting Sharp to agree it would not invalidate my warranty. An irritating problem is that in order to select one of the TEN power settings, you must keep pressing power. It takes six punches to get medium (50%) and eight punches to get defrost (30%). And since this is a 1,200 watt oven, I often need to choose a lesser setting to match with recipes created for my previous, less powerful, 700 watt oven. Then, while cooking, the display only reads “COOK,” not “DEFROST” or “MEDIUM” or “30%.” The door makes a very loud snap when closed. All in all, I will keep this based on my favorable history with Sharp ovens, the oven size versus the small footprint, and the carousel. I have compensated for the hard to read keypad with sticky labels, and I just grumble each time I have to choose a power setting. Sharp has GREAT service. The carousel started acting up during the warranty period, and Sharp had an authorized repair facility within five miles of me. Most small appliance dealers make me go seventy five miles from here. I carried the oven in, they had the motor, and I carried it home in time for supper. I would DEFINITELY purchase Sharp again. And purchasing through Amazon was easy, cost effective, and with quick delivery.

No meal is too much for this solid Sanyo family size microwave oven. Sanyo’s dependability, value and strong design package is apparent by looking at the contemporary door design and simple yet elegant keypad. 1100 Watts of power is strong enough for the heartiest meals. The 1.4 cu.ft. interior is complimented with a large 14 1/4″ glass turntable that accepts full size dinner plates easily. 8 direct access menu keys provide quick programming of your most popular foods and come with a more/less time adjustment. Defrosting was never easier than with the ability to defrost by either weight or time. Multi-stage cooking can be programmed. A child can not inadvertently start the microwave when the child lockout feature is activated. The appealing cosmetic design is enhanced by a two color digital display and attractive white finish……..
Krauss (New York, NY USA)
Microwave heats well but features are primitive…there is no delay start option, even though the display panel has a timer label; this is apparently decorative, and does nothing, as confirmed by reviewing the manual and contacting the company. Also, selecting power level must be done by repeatedly pressing the power button to count down from 10, rather than using the number keypad, as on earlier models. This was disappointing. Buyers should download the manual and read it before purchasing this unit.

In use, it has a rotating plate inside that is a little jerky and makes little bumping noises as it rotates when in use. I had a Wal-Mart one in the past that did the same thing. It is a little annoying, but I guess it gets the job done.

“Same as Dacor” 2009-05-07
By Nevin Cavero II (Grass Valley, Ca.)
Our Dacor microwave of 9 years had rusted out inside on the back wall. Since the unit was a built in, the only microwave that would fit was the same model from Dacor. In checking on replacing the Dacor I found the least expensive price to be $535.00 before shipping. During a chance conversation with an appliance repair person, he told me that Sharp manufactured the Dacor and might be cheaper! I check the Sharp models and found the R-530ES to be identicle to the Dacor with different badging.

We purchased the Sharp R-530ES for only $306.00 delivered.

The Sharp mirowave performs identicle to the Dacor. We are extremely pleased with the unit. It actually has more features than are old Dacor.

“nice microwave” 2009-05-03
By Carol Cameron (Western NY)
I’m a fan of Sharp microwaves. This is my third one. I got my first in 1988, it lasted until 1999. I got my second in 1999 and it lasted until 2009. I expect my next microwave review to take place in 2019.

This microwave has plenty of power to heat quickly, yet the sensor reheat function is fantastic. Put in a plate or a bowl, hit sensor reheat and voila! perfectly heated food. I didn’t expect this feature to work so well, but i find i use it all the time. Aside from that, it’s easy to clean and pretty quiet. I’m not a fan of handles on microwaves so I’ll recommend it as easy to clean as well.

“Same failure of product twice; stay away” 2008-04-28
By Jaker (Los Angeles, CA)
We bought this unit when we redid our kitchen in 2002. After a few years, the metal piece inside on the right side seemed to wear away and the oven caught fire. We replaced the unit with an identical unit bought on Amazon (no criticism of them). After about two years, the new unit had the exact same problem: the unit seemed to wear away in the same spot and caught fire. In both cases, there are smoke marks in the same spot, on the inside right near a metal panel.

I am of the opinion that this unit is not safe and seems to have a design or manufacturing defect. Also, the second unit we bought was noisier and seemed to have some sort of mechanical problem, based on the noise it made when in use. If i can find another unit to fit the built in space and trim kit, i will buy that over the Sharp unit. I will also be trying to contact Sharp to see if they have any response to this problem. I will report in if i do hear anything from them.

“Lots of power, looks good stacked over the Jenn-Air Pro Style oven” 2008-04-07
By J. F. Pointer (Kansas City, MO)
This is my second Sharp microwave; we bought it to stack over the Jenn-Air Pro Style oven in our kitchen remodel. (I bought the built-in installation kit elsewhere.) Like my previous Sharp, this thing is *powerful*. It cuts the cooking time listed on the instructions for most microwave items by half or close to it. The defrost mode is excellent. Having a carousel makes cooking more even.

All in all, it would be hard to find a better microwave at anywhere near this price point or even significantly above it.

“Terrible customer service” 2009-08-10
By Cathy J. Ludwig
After six months of owning this microwave, the door would no longer open. When I called Sharp customer service, they told me to bring it to a service center (the closest of which was an hours drive away). The service center informed me that the door no longer worked because the components had been melted, due to placement of the microwave above the stove. They tried to repair the microwave, but the part was on back order, and after several phone calls to Sharp (who repeatedly said they would call back, and never did) and a month’s time gone by without a microwave, they finally said they would send a replacement (not to my home, but to the service center, which was still an hour away). I explained that I did not want the same model, as it would not effectively work over my stove and was therefore useless to me, and asked if I could get my money back, or if they could send me a comparable model that had a pull handle for the door, rather than a push button. They said neither was possible. When I asked to talk to a manager, I got only a supervisor, who said again they would just ship the exact replacement model, and that they had talked to their engineers and they said there was no evidence that the cause of the door malfunctioning was due to heat from a stove. However, upon further investigation, it appears that this model is not designed for over the stove. Sharp’s customer service is ineffective and not responsive. I am not satisfied with the final solution, as I will get a product that is not meeting my needs. I won’t buy another Sharp product because dealing with their customer service was an absolute nightmare.

“Sharp make the best microwaves” 2009-05-18
By Karie (Hatfield, PA)
I bought this item to replace a similar model I bought ten years ago from Sharp. I was so happy with the old model and it still worked, so I gave it to my brother. I wanted to update my kitchen and could not find this model in stores so I went to the internet. The only complaint I have is that Sharps descriptions of the R-410LK and the R-420LK left me a little confused and I ordered the R-410LK by mistake and had to send it back. The R-210LK works by computing the time you need to cook something rather than by sensor, the R-420lk cooks by sensor. Those sensors make it so easy. Now that I had it over a month, I can tell you I love my new microwave as much as my old one.

“Stuck with an inferior product.” 2009-03-10
By Patsy Morrison (AR USA)
I ordered this microwave because I recently had back surgery and was unable to go to a retail store to make the purchase. I found that the door does not fit properly and I have to close it with both hands. It seems secure after doing this. Since I am unable to box it up and ship it back I am stuck with this inferior product. There is even a warning in the packaging about doors that don’t fit so this makes me think this is a common problem with this microwave. I don’t recommend that anyone buy this microwave by mail. You need to test the door first.

“My 3rd Sharp microwave oven” 2009-01-19
By Bob Stout (Houston, Texas USA)
This is my 3rd Sharp Carousel microwave oven. The first one was a combination microwave/convection oven. After about 10 years, the knobs broke and I used that as an excuse to buy a replacement (the original still works). The replacement I bought next was a digital model in most respects similar to this one. Again, it lasted about 10 years before developing some rust spots along the chamber seams. Again, although it still works, I saw this as a potential fire hazard and replaced it with one as similar as I could. buy.

At 1.4 cu.ft., it’s big enough for just about any use we (family of 6) have for it. With 1100 watts on tap, it cooks very quickly so I usually have to adjust cooking times down from what’s recommended. No matter, though, Sharp’s Sensor Reheat works extremely well on leftovers or just heating canned goods. It does all the usual things, like popping popcorn, effortlessly.

The only thing that’s changed significantly since I bought my last one a decade ago is that the price has gone down! I really love this microwave and wouldn’t consider buying anything other than a Sharp Carousel in the future.

I love the features this microwave comes with, and it’s a very efficent microwave, sleek in look, powerful in it’s cooking power, and does the job very nicely.

In my opinion, the folks who engineered this microwave knew just what they were doing, the auto-sensing feature has worked flawlessly everytime I’ve used it, cooking leftovers perfectly! (not too hot, not too cool) and I love the pop-out adjustable flywheel control.

Dang! this thing is even smart enough (when the clock is set) to tell you to enjoy your breakfast, lunch or dinner (neat little tactile feedback in the display)

“Came damaged” 2009-10-10
By S. Rawal (Central NJ, USA)
I ordered this microwave and it came damaged (dented). It still functioned great: cooks evenly and fast without burning food. Also the design of the unit is great.

So Amazon shipped overnight a new one to replace the first unit. The second one came with a chip on the door and a few scratches under the protective film. I knew this one wasn’t damaged by FedEx because the box’s undamaged foam crating was covering the area of damage.

Both have now been sent back and I will buy something this big from a brick and mortar store where I can inspect it before taking it home.

But regarding the product, it is another fine luxury full size microwave from Panasonic. I have been using my old Genius for 22 years without issue. That one was made in Japan and was $500 when I bought it; this one is made in China. I hope Panasonic kept the same QC and it would last as long…unfortunately I will never find out .

I get the fabulous H98 message which means it needs to be taken to a service center. 10 days to get my warranty letter from the company and another 5-10 days for repairs (IF it is repairable). I called around to reputable stores re high quality microwaves and what they tell me is that the stand alone models are not reliable–they have even stopped selling them. So, not sure whether this model is any better or worse than all the other microwaves being sold out there but buyer, be aware. You are buying low quality, no matter what the price is.

Miller (Camp Verde, AZ USA)
After at least 35 YEARS of use, my old Sharp mIcro/convection oven has begun to get a little tired and the Magnatron tube takes a little longer to microwave frozen dinners. The turntable is getting a little weird also but there are not too many things that last 35 years these days so I have decided to get a new R-820JS. I have used it almost every day and it has worked perfectly up to now. I use it on a cart as my primary oven in lieu of the built-in. I think this oven is the best appliance I have ever owned.Using the combo micro/convection roasting works just great & reduces cooking time while browning just like an older style oven.

However, entire midsection of the control panel stopped working 2 months ago, as did the minute-plus button. Had to resort to creative math to set times. Very finicky panel. Contacted Sharp. They identified a service provider nearby. Its now been 2 weeks. The panel he replaced seems to work, but according to him, something else is not working and so he has to order another part. We requested Sharp to replace the microwave, but they would rather pay a technician more money to try and fix a very finicky appliance than replace it. Beware of buying this piece of junk.

“Awesome microwave” 2009-05-10
By R. Brown (Alaska)
I’m the kind of person who exhaustively researches something (drives my hubby bonkers). We purchased this microwave (after our mic bit the dust) because of the slightly larger size size, price (around $130 on Amazon) and we loved that it was stainless and matched our new appliances.

This microwave heats stuff up great. We have not had problems described in other reviews (our popcorn doesn’t burn — there are three different settings depending on the size of your bag; the inside controls are not inconvenient; and the sound of the tone is loud enough for us). The only thing I miss from my old microwave is the “add 30 seconds” button. However, there is an “add 1 minute” button, so this is probably more a matter of getting used to this feature.

Highly recommended microwave!
